Friday Fun - January 2, 2026

Welcome to my Friday Fun post. This is where I share with three different book parties that post on Fridays: Book Beginnings on Fridays, the Friday 56, and First Line Friday.

This week I have two books to share with you.

I'm starting an eARC of the newest book by Heather Tabers, In Books & Battlefields.

I'm also continuing my reread of the Hunger Games books with the first prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.

        Book Beginnings on Friday

(Please join Gilion Dumas for Book Beginnings every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.)

and

First Line Friday

(Please join Carrie for First Line Friday.)

Here are my Book Beginnings/First Line Friday selections:

In Books & Battlefields by Heather Tabers:

"Dark eyes peer up at me from under a dusty, wide-brimmed hat."

I wondered who this was and how this person was going to impact the story.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins:

"Coriolanus released the fistful of cabbage into the pot of boiling water and swore that one day it would never pass his lips again."

I wondered why he was having to eat something he obviously didn't want anything to do with. I was really curious what I was going to discover about the future dictator's background. And, because I had just noticed the use of the words cold and frozen and ash in the original books, I did take note of the "boiling" hot water.

Now for:
The Friday 56

The Friday 56 is normally hosted over at Freda's Voice. But Anne from My Head is Full of Books is taking over for a while.

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
(If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
(If you have to improvise, that's ok.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don't spoil it) that grab you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url. It's that simple.

Here are my Friday 56 selections:

In Books & Battlefields by Heather Tabers:

"'I was hoping you were finally looking for a book that wasn't required reading for school or the answer to a medical problem you're trying to solve.'
I lean against the wall beside the fireplace, taking Isabella's hands in mine. 'Help me locate the book I need, and I promise to read any book of your choosing.'"

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins:

"By the time he reached the Academy, he had recovered his composure and ascended the steps with assurance. It helped that every head was turning his way, and had there been no Peacekeepers to hold them at bay, he felt sure his schoolmates would have swarmed him. He thought he'd be taken to the office, but the guard deposited him on the bench outside the door to, of all places, the high biology lab, which was restricted to the senior students most gifted in the science."

Reviews:

I finally had a chance to write a bunch of reviews.
